Naples’ Freshman Republican Congressman Trey Radel was arrested on a cocaine possession charge on Tuesday, the result of a DEA operation, according to Politico that broke the story.
News of Radel’s arrest touched off a barrage of calls for his resignation on social media and in comments posted under stories across the web. Radel was arrested for possession of cocaine for an incident that took place on Oct. 29, according to court documents. The misdemeanor charge carries a fine of up to $1,000 and 180 days in jail upon conviction.
In a statement released on Facebook, Radel said he was profoundly sorry that he let down his family and the people of Southwest Florida. But he did not say he will resign his seat representing the 19th District which covers Naples and Fort Myers.
Radel is scheduled to appear in D.C. Superior Court at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
“I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. As the father of a young son and a husband to a loving wife, I need to get help so I can be a better man for both of them.
In facing this charge, I realize the disappointment my family, friends and constituents must feel. Believe me, I am disappointed in myself, and I stand ready to face the consequences of my actions.
However, this unfortunate event does have a positive side. It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counseling. I know I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it, hopefully setting an example for others struggling with this disease. Please keep my family in your prayers.”
