Organizers counted more than 200 in attendance at a Town Hall event called “Closed Government: Eroding Access to Public Records” on Thursday, Feb. 5.
The event was sponsored by Watchdog City and the First Amendment Foundation in partnership with community organizations including the following: Florida SouthWestern State College, East Naples Civic Association, Naples Press Club, Naples Better Government Committee, Collier Citizens Council, Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters of Collier County and North Naples Church.
Speakers were Barbara Petersen, president of the Florida First Amendment Foundation who is considered the state's foremost expert on open government; Gina Edwards, investigative reporter and Watchdog City founder; and Amy Tardif, chair of the Radio Television Digital News Association and news director and station manager for WGCU-FM.
Retired newspaper Editor Phil Lewis moderated the event and retired newspaper company executive Alan Horton offered closing remarks. Naples Daily News columnist Brent Batten provided introductory remarks.
